9/6: Possible Aventures, Janzen's Outline, "God Heard their Cry"

Most classes we'll start with a video (or two), and ask how would (or how did) this person (or these persons) read/interpret the Book of Exodus.  Toady we showed two very different videos, which led to great discussion:

Martin Luther King's final speech:

Extreme Makeover Brothel Edition:

------------------

---We talked some about the Journal assignment (see syllabus at top)...it is very informal, and mostly for YOU.  So a few times this term I will ask to look at them just to be sure you are doing them, and see how it's going.

-We looked at Janzen's thematic/outline chart:  (Explained pp, 19-22, pictured on p. 19, and especially p. 27...much more detail  429-435.  How did it compare to your outline/chart?  Does it make sense to you/  Do your best to see what he means by
ANTICIPATION>REALIZATION
  and
SALVATION/COMMISSIONING OF MOSES>SALVATION/COMMISSIONING OF ISRAEL

---Then we looked at several topics that the Janzen commentary (you read Intro and Part 1 for today)
commented on that might make goo projects for your "Adventure" Assignment (see syllabus at top)

-The "life-saving role of women"  (pp. 39-40)
-Kinship societies (Israel) vs.  Power-based societies (Egypt)  (p. 36)
-"Absence of God"/Lament/"They cried out"  (p, 52)
-Civil disobedience, genocide,apartheid (pp, 36-42)

-

FINALLY, we went with Ray VanDer Laan to Egypt.  We watched an episode called "God Heard Their Cry".  What were the key ideas for you?  Focus on:
-Was life/laboir that bad for Israel in the earlier years.
-The term ZE'AKAH (Hebrew) which the text uses for "they [the Israelities in slavery" cried out":
-God "picked a partner: that would also "hear their cry": Moses
